Introduction
There is a word of the Danish philosopher and theologian Sören Kierkegaard (1813-1855): 'You can live only forwards and backwards only understand life.'
For each human being her/his past is of essential moulding importance. This is true also for organisations and above all for life communities.
This Calendar addresses members of the Society of Jesus, and endeavours to strengthen both the union with the founder of the order and with the tradition, i.e. important events in the history of the Society of Jesus and of the German Provinces.
There have been such publications in the past already. In the year 1870 the almost forgotten 'Collected News from the German Province and the Missions' were published in Maria Laach. But they found already in 1872 an abrupt end by the Jesuits' expulsion from Germany.
In the year 1897 the 'Information from the German Province' was published in exile. Except of the break in the Second World War they appeared until Easter 1967. Obviously editorial reasons were decisive for that. For the last editor, father Adolf Rodewyk, who died in 1989 in Münster at the high age of ninety five, it had become too troublesome to get the needed articles and obituaries.
The Calendar in hand has the same aim as those former publications. It wants to keep and to deepen important knowledge about our Society and the German speaking provinces, and by that to further and strengthen a greater love to the Society of Jesus. The texts have been so redacted that they suit as a short reading at table, especially in the training houses. But not only for younger Jesuits might the sense of historical values be of great importance.
With the choice of the articles the editor has taken advice from competent brethren. Nevertheless improvements and completions will be necessary. Hence the editor is asking for your suggestions and recommendations.
To those who gave help with the preparation of this Calendar, and made possible its publication I return thanks.
